Workers of the World, Unite

The base wage of the air traffic controllers whose wildcat strike closed down Spain's airspace this weekend is 200,000 euros per year.

Nothing to lose but their chains, we suppose.

I know a couple, and they find facetious, ill-informed comments like that deeply hurtful. With wealth comes responsibility - in the form of extra homes and cars - and people like you and I will never understand it, so it's better that we keep quiet.

Still, at least when Zapatero sends in the army to run the trains next year the unions won't have a wheel to skate on.

The fact is they fell into a trap - a government craving the opportunity to appear decisive jumped all over it.

I was careful to say 'base wage'. The overtime supplement is immense.
