Bookie Needed

Slowly getting over our snit about Lance Armstrong, the writer has to admit that Astana manager, Johan Bruyneel, played his cards perfectly. Seen on Saturday's stage decked out in Livestrong gear (thus proving, we think, our take that the entire exercise was mostly a marketing effort for non-Kazakh company), the very sharp Belgian got both the Tour win and his main man onto the podium amidst a phenomenal amount of media coverage. Our suspicion is that he is an investor in Armstrong's company. But all this is milk spilled below a bridge - overshadowed, as it is, by two news items.

The first, being a standard issue 'what did happen', is that Bruyneel and Armstrong were jumping Astana to start a new team sponsored by American electronics retailer, Radio Shack.

The second, being what inexplicably (according to irate Spanish commentators) failed to take place, consists of the observation that Alberto Contador passed on an absolutely riskless run for the super prestigious stage win on Mont Ventoux in order to go back and help his thought-to-be mortal enemy, Lance Armstrong, in his podium battle with Frank Schleck.

Given that...

1). Bruyneel will gut Astana on his departure;

2). The return of Aleksander Vinokurov to this team is going to be even more problematic for Contador than was Lance's arrival;

3). The general take is that a Spanish-sponsored team with Contador at the helm will not be ready for 2010;

4). The only European race of interest to a purely American sponsor is the Tour de France (Armstrong knew where his interests lay) and the only position to finish is first;

5). Contador is the best thing going by a margin - with all the respect due Andy Schleck...

...we see Alberto's pass on the stage win as, at the very least, an indication that the bridge under which the milk was spilled has not suffered the added indignity of being burned.

The real question, however, is: Where can we put a few pesetas on that one?

You are making a lot of sense there Charles. On the other hand, I do think that Lance is deteriorating physically and that Bradley will have learnt a lot from his ride and will be aiming for the podium next year. So how about a bottle of GR Rioja on Bradley in the first three and Lance behind him for 2010?

After that handshake on the podium I'll be cancelling the bet.

Am partial to the Riberas. Is that OK?

Cheers

I wasn't quite thinking Vega Sicilia Unico ... is there something that you like for around the level of, say, a Murrieta GR? Or am I just a dreadful cheapskate?

Try the Toro 'Pintia', from the VS bodega but somewhat cheaper.

Vega Silicia nothing! I set the bar real low. My regular comes in at 70 cents a litre from Torreperogil.

You must introduce me to your merchant. I suspect 70 cents in Spain buys you a lot more than five pounds in London. Seriously then... shall we calibrate the wager at a bottle of the winner's choice to value twenty euros or less? That will buy the Murrieta Blanco, a wine I really rather enjoy (despite it being so woody it does remind one a little of being beaten around the head with a cricket bat)...

David,

Let me see here... that's a little complicated.

I'll take Wiggins off the podium.

The second one? I say Armstrong doesn't ride the Tour next year. You can take the other side of that one if you want.

Cheers

Let me just stir it a bit, though I do not wish to enter into the fine wine discussions... from today's Times...
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/28/sports/cycling/28cycling.html?scp=1&sq=contador&st=cse
in which Contador reveals what a cunt Lance is and Lance confirms it with his cracks about Contador not winning without the team and, after the race, the remarks that had they been on opposing teams, the outcome might have been different (in reality, Lance might well have been 6th...) Speculation is that AC will be racing for Caisse d'Epargne next year, definitely not Astana and that they will get the anthem right in Paris when he hits the podium... is that a shocker or what? In the end, Lance was towed up that last hill and looked totally blown at the end of it, but the fact that he lost 1 1/2 minutes on the time trial makes it pretty clear he no longers trials well and no longer has the legs to kick with the kids on the big hills... he'll be lucky to crack the top ten next year and all the kids know it... myth-understanding... but it did make for a magnificent tour and on the bright side, Lance brought in a LOT of money for all sides...

Sure. Stir it up.

Contador to Caisse is beautiful in theory. The team would be killer on all terrains. The issue is whether you can convince Valverde that he's one day short of being a GC candidate and get him to pull. He's a real showboat.

'Course, the dream outcome is, now that they realize how easily their entire team was highjacked by Livestrong, Astana's sponsors might start thinking they're over their heads and just pass the whole effort off to Santander.

As you can see, I'm trying to get David to book a zillion dollar punt on Lance even showing his face next year. He doesn't talk funny yet, so I'm guessing he's not as dumb as Cassius Clay.
